When starting a diesel engine, frequently a puff of white smoke can be seen. This is usually due to unburnt fuel caused by low engine temperature. Diesel engines need a very high temperature for the fuel combustion. When the combustion temperature is very low, there is only partial combustion and the partially burned fuel comes out of the exhaust as white smoke.

Low engine temperatures can be caused by faulty or damaged glow plugs and not enough heat being given to the engine. Glow plugs should be checked and replaced as necessary. Installing a heating system will provide the necessary heat and prevent fuel wastage and white smoke.

The law requires truck drivers to rest after driving a certain number of hours. Most long-haul drivers rest in the sleeper compartment in the truck and it is common for them to keep the diesel engine idling for proving comfortable heating or cooling conditions. It has been estimated that truck drivers idle engines for 6-8 hours per rest period over 300 days per year.

Auxiliary power units consume only a fraction of the fuel consumed during idling and provide heating and air conditioning needed for driver comfort. As per a Department of Energy report, using auxiliary power units (APUs) can save 700 million gallons of diesel and also decrease carbon dioxide emission by 8.9 million metric tons annually. Ordinances have been passed that exclude the weight of a APU while calculation the total legal weight that a truck can carry. This promotes installation of these units.

Diesel engines are often left idling in the mistaken belief that this reduces wear and tear on the engine. This practice is especially prevalent during the winter months when they are hard to start up.

Idling diesel engines have the following negative effects

  • Idling actually causes more wear and tear on the internal parts and shortens the life of the engine

  • Idling causes a huge waste of fuel

  • Idling causes diesel emissions and exhaust that are harmful to the environment and to human health

Installing an engine heating system will help to avoid the above problems.
