When starting a diesel engine, frequently a puff of white smoke can be seen. This is usually due to unburnt fuel caused by low engine temperature. Diesel engines need a very high temperature for the fuel combustion. When the combustion temperature is very low, there is only partial combustion and the partially burned fuel comes out of the exhaust as white smoke.

Low engine temperatures can be caused by faulty or damaged glow plugs and not enough heat being given to the engine. Glow plugs should be checked and replaced as necessary. Installing a heating system will provide the necessary heat and prevent fuel wastage and white smoke.
