SPST relays are an abbreviation for Single Pole Single Throw relays. SPST relays have four terminals also known as four poles or four pins. In an SPST relay, the relay's coil is powered by terminals 85 and 86. The third terminal is a common terminal designated as 30 and one normally open terminal designated as 87.

When the relay coil is inactive, there is no contact between terminal 87 and 30 and contact is said to be open. When the relay coil is energized, the electromagnet in the relay causes contact to be made between terminal 30 and terminal 87. Since only one connection can be made in one direction, it is known as Single Pole, Single Throw.

These types of relays are also known as normally open relays or NO relays because the contact is open when no power is being applied to the relay.
